There are few professions besides lawyers that are targeted as often for jokes as doctors, even when it’s Doctors Day. Regardless of all the jokes, however, the 2010 rendition of the 77-year-old honorary holiday is yet another reminder that doctors are an irreplaceable part of society that deserves our most utmost respect. March 30 has officially been Doctors’ Day since 1990 when Congress proclaimed the holiday, and it has been celebrated across the United States for all these years. However, Doctors’ Day 2010 hearkens all the way back to March 30, 1933. The Huffington Post says that that’s when the wife of Dr. Charles Almond, Eudora Brown Almond, (based out of Winder, Georgia) began honoring physicians.

On an everyday basis, doctors handle our well-being and take on the mantle of that responsibility. Without the help of doctors, the normal lifespan of human beings would be far shorter. Not needing quick payday loans to fund the expense of a doctor’s visit is not a good trade-off.

It’s now too late to send cards through the postal service, for today is Doctors Day 2010, but even nevertheless, the thought definitely counts. Flowers such as the red carnation – which is associated with the National Doctors Day Holiday – are certainly fitting. The Huffington Post suggests more creative gifts, like a squeezable stress ball or Rx chocolate bar.
